We are excited to share some good news. As many states are moving from “Stay at Home” to “Safer at Home” restrictions, Christian Living Communities-Cappella’s leadership team has been working to distill directives and evaluate procedures in order to strike a balance between the crucial need to maintain the physical health of residents with mental health that leads to happiness.
We have developed new procedures pertaining to in-person visits via a plexiglass divider, self-isolation after essential appointments, residents who are able, to drive themselves to essential appointments, and excursions, which vary by community based on virus activity within the community, state regulations, and level of care. In all levels of living, state directives supersede new procedures. This is an unprecedented time, and every decision we make is with the health and happiness of residents, families, and team members in mind. We are diligently planning, resourcing materials, and training staff on the new operational procedures. While we are overjoyed that residents can enjoy greater freedoms and in-person family visits, we are still facing a virus that disproportionally affects older adults. We ask that everyone continue to do all they can to stay healthy and be mindful of the risk of exposure to this virus. Residents must stay well for our community to be well.

We are pleased to share that we still have no positive cases of COVID-19 among residents and team members at Heritage Crossing. We are incredibly grateful for the diligent efforts of team members to care for and serve our residents through frequent cleaning and sanitizing, delivering meals and more. We continue to ask team members to limit their social exposure as well.
While some services in many states have reopened, the easing of restrictions does not apply to senior living communities. The vulnerable older adult population is still at risk and our highest priority is to keep residents and team members healthy and safe. We understand the desire for families to see their loved ones on Mother’s Day and how hard it will be not to visit face-to-face. Families can call, send cards or flowers. Window visits, car parades, and virtual visits will make the day special and keep everyone safe. Team members in the community are planning to celebrate moms throughout the day.

While many cities and states are beginning to relax stay at home restrictions, resident safety remains our utmost concern. Communities will maintain the current level of virus prevention protocols including restricted visitation and use of personal protective equipment as per guidelines from the CDC.
We also continue to ask team members to use social distancing and shelter-at-home measures when not at work. Though it is challenging, especially when the rest of the city or county is loosening restrictions, these steps are intended to ensure the health and safety of everyone who lives and works at our community.

Executive Director, Stephanie Chambers, would like to give all the Heritage Crossing families a personal update on how the residents are doing during the COVID quarantine period.
We are happy to update this status and let you know that we have no confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Heritage Crossing. Also, the State of Ohio has issued new directives requiring team members who work directly with positive or presumed positive residents to wear N95 masks. Any one working directly with other residents need to wear medical masks and cloth masks will be worn for those without direct contact. These measures are taken out of an abundance of caution. The team continues extensive virus prevention protocols to help keep EVERYONE who lives and works at Heritage Crossing safe and well. The Governor of the State of Ohio has issued a stay-at-home order also known as a shelter-in-place order effective at 12:00 am Monday March 23rd. This order means at that time, residents of Heritage Crossing will not be allowed to leave the community except for essential medical visits.
All previous virus mitigation restrictions continue to remain in place regarding dining, limited life enrichment, and only essential care visitors. Only essential businesses continue to operate; senior living providers are deemed as essential businesses. All community employees are considered to be essential workers and will continue to report to work as scheduled, providing they are well.
All Heritage Crossing employees and care essential visitors will continue to be screened, and temperatures checked before entering the community. We maintain daily virus-mitigation cleanings and careful assessment for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19.
At this time, we DO NOT have any confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our community.

They say challenging times bring out the best in people. Anyone who has tried to buy toilet paper recently may disagree with that statement. In a broader sense, however, we see evidence this is true. Neighbors are reaching out on the Nextdoor social media app offering to purchase groceries and run errands for older neighbors; teachers are providing non-perishable food to low-income students while schools are closed, and most importantly, the majority of Americans are following guidelines for social distancing. Nevertheless, social isolation can bring problems of its own. If you have a family member living in a nursing, assisted living or memory support community, you may be especially feeling that isolation. Fortunately, readily available technology can aid in alleviating some of the loneliness and anxiety about your loved one while helping to build community at the same time.
There are multiple free or very low-cost ways to connect with loved ones through technology. The most obvious and lowest-tech one is the phone. A daily phone call cannot only make your family member feel important, but it is a good way to check up on their mental wellbeing.
Older adults who live in a community can benefit from team members helping them connect via technology with family. If a resident is not comfortable using platforms like Skype or FaceTime to video chat with loved ones, Life Enrichment Coordinators can help them make the video calls. Additionally, Cappella Living Solutions utilizes the OneDay phone application. This is a video sharing app that enables team members to record short videos of residents’ life stories or daily activities and send them directly to family members. They can also share the video to social media when appropriate.
Social media is an excellent way to stay connected. Instagram and Facebook are great visual means for sending messages to isolated family members. In 2018, Facebook launched Watch Parties. A Watch Party is a way to connect and watch an event, program or video with other people and chat via the app. Recently, churches have used Watch Parties or YouTube Live to connect worshippers with compromised immune systems with their fellow congregants. There are also Facebook groups that focus on common interests, hobbies, and discussion topics. With a little set-up and help, older adults can participate and feel they are a part of a much larger community.
We want to help older adults find purpose in this time of social distancing. We hope this restricted access to assisted living and memory support communities will be short, and family members and loved ones can get back to their normal engaging routines. In the meantime, there are benefits to short periods without distractions. If you want to help, consider sending fun greeting cards to your local senior living community. Have children draw pictures and send letters to residents; they may even get a response letter. Cappella Living Solutions is encouraging residents to start seedlings by providing pots and seeds to grow in their senior apartments and many similar creative outlets. Great creativity is a bi-product of such times!
With the continued spread of the coronavirus and recent news of fatalities in the US, we want to communicate initiatives we are taking to address concerns residents and family members of Heritage Crossing Senior Living. First, the health and wellbeing of the community and team members is our highest priority. Our clinical team created coronavirus specific policies and procedures based on our Norovirus Protocol in place. We are keeping applicable personnel informed as new information is gathered and we’ve implemented specific action items and guidelines to protect resident. We want to encourage everyone to help prevent the potential of the virus entering our community by avoiding close contact with people who are sick and we are requiring team members who are ill to stay home. Following everyday recommended preventive actions like washing hands, using alcohol-based hand sanitizers and covering your cough is effective.
